This article impacts me as an special education teacher because it’s my job to make a safe and trustworthy environment for all my students. As a teacher working with not only students with ASD, but also general education children, I want to work toward earning their trust. In order to obtain this, I need to set up a safe environment in my classroom where there are activities that keep a healthy regulated emotional state. I plan on having a scheduled routine that is followed everyday without wavering from it unless it is told well in advance to my students. I understand it is difficult for teachers to give one on one attention to a class of 25 or 30 students, but I think special accommodations need to be made specifically for students with ASD who are in an inclusion setting. Perhaps this could be accomplished by having a quiet corner in the room they could go to when they are feeling overwhelmed or distraught. It is imperative as a teacher to develop that trust in students with ASD in order to make them as successful in and out of the classroom as possible.
