You too?! Common Stories from an Uncommon Parent

My very first success in using a visual schedule with my boys occurred while shopping (which is absolutely appropriate given my penchant for retail therapy!). When the boys were very young, and also very troubled by their autism, my husband frequently had to go out of town for work. So I was often alone with the guys, trying to figure out how to buy groceries, get gas for the car, and run the myriad of errands required to manage the household. . . . I quickly cut out pictures of food items from the newspaper; glued them onto a piece of paper in the order in which we would buy them; and showed the schedule to the boys. Then we got in the car and went grocery shopping. Voilá! We actually managed to get everything we needed without someone screaming or running down the aisle, crying, or bolting out of the store! To read this entire article Subscribe »
