Life Construction Ahead
Children with autism spectrum disorders face multiple challenges in the process of learning rules and how to follow them.… Younger children, or those who tend to think more concretely, may not realize that specific directions (such as, "Pick up the blocks in the block bin") form the basis for more general rules ("Pick up after you finish an activity"). Older children (or those with Asperger syndrome) may break rules even when they can quote them and notice when others break them. Yet, in general, individuals with ASDs may not recog-nize where and when the rule applies, or may not be able to "put on the brakes" before it's too late. When they don’t follow rules it is rarely a matter of intentionally disregarding them, but rather a result of insufficient mastery of the skills that go into rule-governed behavior.
