As important as scientific investigation is, the mere publication of a research study does not guarantee its quality or accuracy. Furthermore, while the peer review process confers a certain cachet to studies, it does not necessarily ensure objectivity.… Clearly, scientists have the information and skills necessary to recognize flaws in research methodology and to render judgments regarding the soundness of research findings. But what about parents, educators, and those others “in the trenches” who don’t have a scientific background? Indeed, is it even important for them to make such judgments?
